Wendy Williams Apologizes for Mocking Joaquin Phoenix’s Scar

At last, folks, it has happened.

Wendy Williams has said something so insensitive that even the talk show host herself has acknowledged as much and apologized for speaking out of turn.

Mark this occasion on your calendar folks. Who know when we’ll see anything like it again…

On Tuesday, The Wendy Williams Show anchor made a remark on air about a scar the Joker star has above his lip during the “Hot Topics” segment of her terrible program.

“When he shaves off his mustache, he’s got a hairline fracture, he’s got one of those – what do you call it? Cleft lip, cleft palate,” she told the audience, pulling her lip up to further mock the condition.

We’ve posted a screen capture of Williams making this gesture above.

And you can see the mark on Phoenix’s face to which Williams is referring below:

While the veterran actor has never publicly addressed the origin of his scar, the Golden Globe winner did describe it as “not a surgically fixed cleft” but a “nonsurgical scar he was born with” in a 2019 interview with Vanity Fair.

In other words: it’s a deformity that Phoenix has had his entire life, through no fault of his own.

And Williams went ahead and dragged him for it on national television.

Among those who went after Williams for this insult was Cher, who slammed the talk show host all over the place on Twitter this week.

cher tweets

“THESE ARE THE PPL @WendyWilliams IS MAKING FUN OF,” Cher, a long-time an ally for the cleft palate community Tweeted, replying to a message that featured images of the singer interacting with cleft palette sufferers.

Added Cher:

“Joaquin Phoenix was a Child,& We Don’t Know What He Had To Go Through.

“HE IS ONE OF THE GREAT ACTORS OF OUR TIME,MAGNETIC,& MORE THAN HANDSOME!! SHE WILL BE JUDGED FOR THIS FOREVER.”

Wendy’s comments, meanwhile, also caught the attention of Canadian football player Adam Bighill, whose baby son Beau just underwent cleft palate repair surgery… and who said her on-air slight “clearly promotes bullying.”

And this is what prompted the Mea Culpa from Williams, at last.

“We’re thinking about Beau today as he is in surgery,” she wrote on Twitter.

“I want to apologize to the cleft community and in Beau’s honor, our show is donating to @operationsmile and @AmerCleftPalate and encourage our Wendy Watchers to learn more and help support the cleft community.”

Cher, however, wasn’t satisfied with this one Tweet or with this gesture.

“THERE IS NO APOLOGY FOR WHAT SHE DID…& LAUGHED ABOUT !!” the artist responded.

“I KNOW THESE CHILDREN,& ADULTS.THEY GO THROUGH HELL,THEIR PARENTS GO THROUGH HELL !! Fk Her Apology. SHE WANTS TO KEEP HER JOB !! I CANT CONTAIN MY ANGER !!”

Bighill, for his part, was quick to forgive Williams, though.

“Thank you @WendyWilliams for your apology, your donation, and for thinking of Beau today for his surgery,” he wrote online. “I forgive you, and I encourage others to as well. I wish you all the best.”

The surprise here is not that Williams said something mean about someone famous.

It’s not this is the one time she chose to apologize, despite, to cite just a few example, in the past she…

She is a bad human being, you guys.
